Here are 7 tips for writing articles on a regular basis.

1.  Keep a record of ideas
I like to have notebooks in every room in my house.  If I suddenly have a flash of inspiration then I like to be able to write ideas down immediately.  Don’t kid yourself that you’ll remember, because you won’t.

2.  Write something every day
If you’re going to be writing regularly it’s important that you establish it as a habit as soon as possible.  Even if you only have time to write for 15 minutes a day, make sure that you schedule time for your writing and stick to it.  You’ll soon find it easier to write.

3.  Use a writing formula
If you’re not used to writing on a regular basis one of the things that can really help is to work using the same writing formula.  Remember back to you school days when you were taught essay writing – this is the same sort of idea.

  • Introduction (when you give an overview of the topic to be covered),
  • 3 -4 paragraphs( each covering a different but related issue)
  •  Summary or conclusion (which reiterates the main points( without introducing any new information).

4.  Work smart
If you’re going to make the most effective use of your time, you want to ensure that your writing activities are very organised.  Do your activities in blocks – for example you might spend an hour on researching and 30 minutes on key word research and then 2 hours article writing.  When you do your research or key word research don’t just get information for one article that is far too time consuming.

5.  Keep articles to a single topic
A common mistake that people make when they start article writing is to try and put too much information in a single article and confusing their readers.  Stick to one topic.  You can always write a couple more related articles.

6.  Don’t make your articles too long
I know you’re thinking well how long is too long.  That’s a hard one to answer because I’ve read articles well over 1000 words which have been very interesting.  But according to data produced by kissmetrics only 16% of the people who look at an article will read it word for word.  Many will be caught by images and calls to action.  So although you want to provide visitors with good content do not go on and on and on.

Most article directories insist on a minimum length of 400 words and many writers keep their articles under 500 words.  Although I occasionally write articles of 800 words or more I would generally look to see if it could be split into two.

7.  Don’t write and edit at the same time
It can really slow down your writing time, if you’re constantly trying to edit at the same time as writing.  I saw a suggestion recently from someone who said they type with their computer monitor switched off so that they aren’t constantly looking at what they’ve written.  This may be something you want to try.

Summary
These are just 7 tips of issues that you should be thinking about if you’re going to be writing articles on a regular basis, and will help you to make the writing process easier and more enjoyable. Remember do some writing every day and make sure that you make effective use of your time by working smart.  Happy writing
